Senseonics, Beta Bionics to Combine Eversense 365 with iLet Bionic Pancreas

Senseonics has begun a partnership with Beta Bionics that will aim to integrate the former’s Eversense 365 continuous glucose monitor (CGM) with the latter’s iLet Bionic Pancreas automated insulin delivery (AID) system.

The company believes Eversense 365’s design, consistent performance, and reduced burden suit it well for AID systems. The integrated system will merge year-long glucose sensing with adaptive insulin delivery that eliminates carb counting and automatically determines and delivers insulin doses.

“Our Eversense 365 is redefining the CGM market with long-term implantable technology designed to empower better diabetes management and reduce device burden,” said Tim Goodnow Ph.D., president and CEO of Senseonics. This collaboration with Beta Bionics will expand our reach to a greater population of people to enable them to manage their diabetes with the most advanced technologies available today,”

The CGM measures glucose continuously for up to 365 days and can replace fingersticks for treatment decisions, the company said, though periodic calibration and fingersticks are still required when symptoms conflict with CGM readings or when taking tetracycline-class medications. Sensor insertion and removal are performed by a healthcare provider.

The iLet AID system makes 100% of insulin dosing decisions, adjusting and delivering background (basal) and correction insulin automatically. Instead of tracking exact grams of carbohydrates, users announce meals as “usual,” “more,” or “less” than their typical amount. It needs only the user’s body weight to start and continuously learns individual insulin needs over time without manual ratio adjustments.

Development of the combined device is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. Commercial launch is planned shortly afterward, following testing, validation, and regulatory requirements.

“We are excited to be working with Beta Bionics on integrating Eversense 365 with the iLet Bionic Pancreas to give more people with diabetes a differentiated AID option and greater choice in finding the experience that is right for them,” continued Dr. Goodnow. “Building on the early success from our first pump integration, we believe the combination of year-long glucose sensing and advanced automated insulin delivery offers compelling, differentiated benefits for people with diabetes and expands the choices available to them within the AID category.”

Earlier this year, the company launched its Eversense 365 CGM integrated with the twist AID system from Sequel Med Tech.
